Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin’s Fiancé Hospitalized With Infection Months After Skiing Accident

Mikaela Shiffrin is supporting fiancé Aleksander Aamodt Kilde after his recovery from a ski accident earlier this year hit a snag.
Months after sustaining several injuries—including a dislocated shoulder, two torn shoulder ligaments and a laceration on his calf requiring urgent surgery—in a crash during a World Cup race in the Swiss Alps in January, the Norwegian alpine skier shared that an “angry infection” resulted in him being rushed to the hospital.
"Been struggling with some increased pain in my repaired shoulder over the last couple weeks which really seemed like a normal reaction after increasing load and training more 'normal,'" Kilde wrote on Instagram July 30. "Long story short — I got an angry infection that has caused some damage, which is quite a setback in my shoulder rehab."
The 31-year-old continued, "This means 6 weeks of IV antibiotics everyday through a PICC line that lives in my arm until the infection is all gone and the bone is back smiling."
Kilde, who won silver and bronze medals at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, and Shiffrin both shared photos of him in his hospital bed.
"Out of the many lessons I learn from you, one of the greatest is—Smile," Shiffrin who won gold medals at the Winter Olympics in 2014 and 2018, wrote alongside a selfie of herself and her fiancé. "Even through the s--t. I love you @akilde . Forward."
Kilde also posted a video of Shiffrin, 29, wiping away food residue from the fellow skier's face after helping to feed him.
"I am so lucky and grateful," he wrote, "to be surrounded by incredible, caring, brilliant people both at home and away."
Kilde and Shiffrin announced their engagement in April, sharing a joint post showing the her displaying a sparkling engagement ring. The Colorado native and Norwegian athlete originally met at a ski camp and have been together for more than three years.
While they’ve kept their relationship out of the spotlight, Kilde previously gave rare insight into their dynamic.
"To give a space for your partner and also other human beings is something I've experienced as being really cool and a great way of living," he said in a 2023 interview with Olympics.com. "That's how we also do our relationship, is that we are just authentic and we don't need to hide anything and there's nothing to hide."
He continued, "Of course we need our privacy, but we also get that it's not that crazy. But for me, it's all about just enjoying, being with someone that's super into what you do and into you. And it goes both ways and that's a good balance. It can't be better."
